Prophets in the Age of Kings

The Illuminate Study Guide is a packet inluding a copy of the Illuminate booklet for study participants and a four-page leaflet of supplemental material for each lesson. Study goals, discussion questions, and lesson application along with the supplemental commentary provide useful tools for the study leader.

After the reign of King David and King Solomon in Israel, the kingdom is split between the north (Israel made up of ten tribes) and the south (Judah and Benjamin). A series of kings follow in both kingdoms until Israel is destroyed in about 722 B.C. by the Assyrians, and Judah by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in 586 B.C.  During this period the role of a prophet becomes a powerful phenomenon in both kingdoms as God raises up men and women who are chosen to communicate God's word and his will, often directly to the king in power. This study, instead of telling the familiar stories of the well-known kings, looks at ten different prophets and how they represent God in bringing either words of divine judgment or words of encouragement and assurance, depending on what the situation requires.
