The Law
The Illuminate Study Guide is a packet inluding a copy of the Illuminate booklet for study participants and a four-page leaflet of supplemental material for each lesson. Study goals, discussion questions, and lesson application along with the supplemental commentary provide useful tools for the study leader.
This series provides an overview of the Mosaic Law, both as it was originally given by Yahweh on Mt. Sinai, and then as it was reiterated by Moses in the book of Deuteronomy as a means of “covenant renewal.” The detailed laws in regard to the sacrificial system are mostly omitted in this study, but the passages chosen do seek to provide an overview of the moral law of God—both in relationship to Yahweh and to one’s neighbor.
If the Mosaic Law has received something of a bad rap in the minds of many due to exposure the Pauline description of the Law as “the ministry of death” (2 Cor. 3:7), we need to remember that in spite of the fact that the Law can never lead to salvation, it was given as a critically important guide to a covenant relationship. It was not designed by Yahweh to be restrictive or confining, but so that “it may go well with you,” so that “your days may be long.” (Deut. 6:2-3) In other words, the Law simply laid out the path to success.
